Shot Blast Media

Join us as we sit down with Tom Wright, who recently celebrated his first month at Shot Blast Media.

From the joys of a chilled working environment to the challenges of tight deadlines, Tom shares insights into his role as a Camera Operator and Editor, along with memorable moments from client shoots.

What have you enjoyed most about working at Shot Blast Media so far?

I’ve enjoyed the chilled working environment the most so far working at Shot Blast Media. The whole team gets on so well and we can have fun while working. There’s also a real drive to experiment and improve, so the team is helpful in that sense.

What does your role involve?

My job title is Camera Operator and Editor, but we all pull together at Shot Blast Media, so my role encompasses assisting work, as well as dealing with lighting and sound.

What are some challenges you have overcome since joining?

Since we work towards deadlines, I’ve definitely had to improve my efficiency in editing. I’ve been thrown in the deep end on some shoots, having to solely operate a camera due to time constraints, and producing quality gimbal work.

What has been your favourite client shoot so far?

My favourite client shoot so far has been with RWE, where we hired out an Airbnb to stay over and shoot in. This was a great shoot, with a large budget and crew. The best part of the shoot was relaxing in the hot tub in the evenings.

What motivated you to pursue a career in video production?

I’ve always had an interest in video, and even created YouTube videos while in secondary school. I would say I’m a bit of a film buff, so I couldn’t think of a better job than within the creative industry.

What are some goals you hope to achieve in your role at Shot Blast Media?

I hope to continue to improve my skills within the camera department, both technically and creatively. Shot Blast Media is a great place to experiment with my cinematography. I also hope to train as a drone operator and attend courses during my time here to specialise in lighting and stabilisation systems.

Can you share any tips or tricks you’ve learned during your first month that have helped you in your role?

We have some behind the scenes content coming out soon, where we show some useful tips and tricks on a shoot. Keep an eye out for that one.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the field of video production?

The main thing I’ve learnt during my time at Shot Blast Media and freelancing in London, is the importance of perseverance. If you commit yourself to learning the craft, taking every opportunity available, including unpaid work or work experience, then you will succeed in this industry.

I am only young, and still have a lot to learn. I am lucky to work with an experienced team at Shot Blast Media, but I’ve also gained invaluable experience on unpaid work, assisting industry professionals.

What aspects of the company culture at Shot Blast Media have stood out to you?

The biggest aspect that stood out to me at Shot Blast Media is the community and culture. We are all friends inside and out of work, arranging regular socials for activities, food and drinks.

Shot Blast Media has a strong interest in my personal career, with monthly one-to-one meetings with my manager. I specialised in short films whilst at university, which I found important to develop my creativity, and Shot Blast Media allows time for us to shoot our own personal projects. There’s no concept of failure here, as we learn far more by failing and problem solving.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about as you continue your journey with Shot Blast Media?

I am excited to continue my career as a Camera Operator, growing as an individual and within Shot Blast Media, as we look to expand the company.

As Tom embarks on his journey with Shot Blast Media, we’re excited to see how he continues to grow and excel in his role.

With a passion for creativity and a drive to improve, Tom embodies the innovative spirit of our team.
