It's been a while since we've looked at and reviewed some of the great stuff we've been watching recently. Thankfully, more and more great content is showing up on our cinema and TV screens. So today, we've got a few more recommendations we'd love to share with you! No Time To Die (In cinemas now) It has felt like an eternity waiting for Daniel Craig's latest and final outing as James Bond. The pandemic has delayed this film a number of times but now it's here, was it worth the wait? No Time To Die is one of the better Craig films out there, along with Casino Royale and Skyfall. As it should be, considering this is his last film. There's some great stuff in here, all the best and what you'd expect from a Bond film. Craig puts in a great performance for his swan song which is worth the price of admission alone! Do yourself a favour and book your viewing as soon as you can, this isn't one to miss. Sex Education (Netflix) Now on it's recently released third season, Sex Education has been entertaining audiences for a few years now, being one of Netflix's biggest original shows. A blend of comedy and teen drama, the show focuses on a group of late teens attempting to navigate their way through life with the prospects of sex, relationships and the like changing their lives in a multitude of ways. Who are some of our most influential filmmakers of today? We've looked at some our favourites of the past, some of the greats including Ridley Scott and Alfred Hitchcock. Of course, some of these filmmakers are still producing great movies, but there's a new generation of artists crafting such great works that we admire a whole lot. So we thought in this blog we'd look at some of them, so you can get a few new film recommendations from truly great directors. Denis Villeneuve The French-Canadian filmmaker has made some big waves in the last few years. Known for his sci-fi movies, Villeneuve is a very passionate filmmaker who has a great love for the big screen and is devoted to capturing the most beautiful looking settings and telling the most ambitious stories. From Arrival to the much loved sequel to Blade Runner 2049, the upcoming Dune adaptation is his next work that everyone is extremely excited for. Some of his other films include Sicario and Prisoners, two epic thrillers that also deserve your attention. It's Euro 2020! England have just beaten old foes Germany this past week in their round of 16 match at Wembley, winning 2-0, making history! Then they went onto devastate Ukraine with 4-0 to England! It's a very exciting time for football fans up and down the country, with the hopes of the Three Lions getting into the final. Fingers crossed we haven't jinxed it! So whilst football fever is in the air, we thought we'd look at some of the best football themed films and shows out there that, if you're tired of waiting for the next match, hopefully a couple of these shall be able to tide you over! Ted Lasso If you've got a subscription to Apple TV, then you've got the opportunity to watch this absolute gem. A TV show starring Jason Sudeikis as the loveably naïve Ted Lasso, a small-time American football coach, who is hired to coach a professional football team in England, despite having no experience coaching the sport. It's a bizarre comedy with plenty of great humour, particularly from Sudeikis, but there's also a lot of heart, warmth and incredible drama in here too. Bend It Like Beckham Everyone knows this one, a British cult classic featuring Kiera Knightly as an aspiring football player looking to stray away from the typical norms of womanhood and blow everyone away at what she can do with the sport. A few weeks ago we blogged about cinemas reopening, primarily in the USA, where many had had great turnouts to some long awaited films. It was only a matter of time before the UK opened the doors of chains such as Cineworld and Odeon, and fortunately for us, we've also had a great opening too. So what does this spell for the future of the cinema experience? In the last week, films such as Peter Rabbit 2 took an estimated £7m in ticket sales, the best for a film since March 2020, before we went into lockdown. Godzilla vs. Kong also performed very well, despite the circumstances regarding it's release such as being on digital home platforms for the last month. Odeon said that it sold 25,000 portions of popcorn, 9,000 portions of nachos, 3,000 hot dogs and 25,000 litres of drinks in just the first four days after cinemas reopened! Those are great numbers! This just proves with certainty that people are aching to get in front of the big screen again, something unexpected due to the past year, but welcomed all the same. It seems as though people are missing these luxuries, and that couldn't be more obvious, even when they're available in other places, safe from COVID, the cinema has had a strong resurgence. And these numbers are only going to get better, as highly anticipated films such as Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II are releasing this weekend, and in terms of the latter, it will be exclusive to cinemas. The world is opening back up again, slowly but surely, and with that comes the reopening of cinemas. Now we've talked about how the pandemic has effected cinema on our blog before, but things seem to be making a change. In the United States, the newly released Godzilla vs. Kong movie has set a pandemic record with a $48.5 million debut. This is huge, a film that didn't really have too much advertising behind it until the last month or so, has done what Christopher Nolan's Tenet tried to accomplish last year, in creating a massive consumer return to cinemas. Of course in the UK we're still waiting for cinemas to reopen. But is this recent success for the US be a sign that cinemas are going to survive longer than what we presumed a year ago? Potentially. It's worth noting that cinemas in the UK aren't due to be opened until at least June if the government's roadmap goes according to plan. So, that's a couple of months delay for us to catch up to the US, so our cinemas won't be able to reap the financial benefits of what Godzilla vs. King could possibly make. Yet, June is the perfect time to open. Summer blockbusters are the ultimate money makers for cinemas, and with big films such as Black Widow and The Suicide Squad releasing this summer, people will be aching to get back in front of the big screen to see a film, especially these ones. So it's occurred to us recently whilst we've been browsing Netflix in our free time that we've been watching a lot of the same stuff over and over again, or stuff that's so similar to what we've already watched, we may as well not branch into watching other things.  But why is that the case? It can't be down simply to the simple fact that we like a certain genre or type of visual media, because everyone likes more than one genre. If you could, we're sure you'd love to watch a comedy now and again as compared to the vast amount of docuseries you've been watching. So what could it be? Netflix's algorithm is designed to cater to the individual and your favourite genres and subjects. Infact, you could literally create a new account, watch a single documentary, and the rest of your recommendations would be documentaries. Usually, these recommendations are the first things we'll see, and many people just don't want to have to scroll to find something. They want their content fast, immediately. That's what Netflix is designed for. And sure, this isn't applied to everyone, as a lot of people will search for something else. But sometimes it can be hard to avoid.
