1. Home Alone – An absolute Christmas classic! Home Alone is a 1990 comedy film directed by Chris Columbus and written and produced by John Hughes. The film stars Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, a boy who defends his suburban home from burglars after his family accidentally leaves him behind on their vacation to Paris. You can spend hours watching all the sequels too!
2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas – This is a 2000 Christmas comedy film directed by Ron Howard, based on Dr. Seuss’s 1957 children’s book of the same name. The film is narrated by Anthony Hopkins and stars Jim Carrey as The Grinch. This is a wholesome film with some great Christmas messages throughout, and one for the whole family.
3. Love Actually – This is a 2003 Christmas-themed romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Richard Curtis. This is Maddy’s favourite Christmas film which she usually watches whilst wrapping up all of her Christmas presents. The film delves into different aspects of love as shown through ten separate stories involving lots of characters, many of whom are interlinked.
4. Elf – This is a 2003 American Christmas comedy film directed by Jon Favreau and written by David Berenbaum. The movie stars Will Ferrell as Elf, a human raised by Santa’s elves, who learns about his origins and heads to New York to meet his biological father. A Hilarious film which is perfect for a Christmas eve movie session.
5. Arthur Chirstmas – This is a great family Christmas film with some meaningful messages added too. This is a 2011 animated Christmas sci-fi comedy film directed by Sarah Smith. The film centres on Arthur Claus, the clumsy but well-meaning son of Santa Claus, who discovers that his father’s high-tech ship has failed to deliver one girl’s present. Accompanied only by his reckless grandfather he embarks on a mission to deliver the missed present.
6. Nativity! – This is a 2009 British Christmas musical comedy film directed by Debbie Isitt. In the film teacher Paul Maddens (Martin Freeman) lies to his rival that Hollywood are coming to watch his school’s Christmas nativity, but the lie gets out of hand, and he has to resolve this by contacting an ex. Make sure to watch the sequels too, starring David Tennant and Martin Clunes.
7. The Polar Express – This is a 2004 animated Christmas adventure film co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, based on the 1985 children’s book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg. The film features characters animated using live-action and motion-capture CGI. On Christmas eve, a boy sees a mysterious North Pole bound train stop outside his window and is invited aboard, joining several other children as they embark on a journey to visit Santa Claus preparing for Christmas.
8. The Holiday – A heartwarming Christmas romcom to enjoy. The Holiday is a 2006 romantic comedy film written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers. The story focuses on two lovelorn women from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, who arrange a home exchange to escape heartbreak during the Christmas and holiday season, but find new love during their time away.
9. The Snowman – This is a 1982 British animated film and symphonic poem based on Raymond Briggs’ 1978 picture book of the same name, directed by Dianne Jackson. The story of this magical snowman is told through pictures, action and music, scored by Howard Blake, and is wordless, with the exception of the central song “Walking in the Air”. A great BAFTA-winning film to watch this holiday season.
10. Gremlins – This film is for those who don’t want to watch a Christmassy classic. Gremlins is a 1984 American black comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante and written by Chris Columbus. The story follows a young man who receives a strange creature as a pet (a gremlin), which then spawns other creatures who transform into destructive, aggressive monsters that wreak havoc on a town on Christmas Eve.
